Quinta rappresenta una scena di backstage, un momento catturato durante lo svolgersi di un servizio fotografico nella mia camera da letto. Le due ragazze, le mie coinquiline di allora, indossano vestiti realizzati appositamente per loro, immortalate in atteggiamenti spontanei di cura reciproca, mentre altre presenze nascoste fanno capolino tra gli oggetti di scena. La paura del buio e l’insonnia che provavo da bambina facevano sì che vedessi delle forme prendere vita, sugli scaffali e sulle mensole, negli angoli disordinati della mia cameretta. Giurerei che una notte, aprendo gli occhi, una mano sia apparsa all’improvviso, a pochi centimetri dal mio volto, con il dito indice puntato verso di me, il cui braccio partiva dalla libreria posizionata frontalmente al mio letto. Non sempre ero spaventata da queste apparizioni, talvolta stavo a fissarle a lungo, fino a quando, piano piano, il loro alone mi rimaneva impresso nella cornea e il buio le riassorbiva. Il linguaggio pittorico all’interno della mia ricerca è spesso utilizzato quale mezzo iconologico e diventa, talvolta, esso stesso il protagonista, un filtro ombroso e stratificato che modifica la realtà, donandogli un’ulteriore chiave di lettura. In Doni e In cammino, l’oggetto, rappresentato arbitrariamente fuori scala, attraverso le pennellate e le stratificazioni di colore più o meno dense subisce un camuffamento che ne ribalta il significato. Così come nella ritrattistica pittorica rinascimentale, le statue da presepe dipinte in grandi dimensioni acquistano una “presenza” verso cui ci si può confrontare; l’aspetto rigido, disequilibrato, e il corpo sproporzionato proprio delle statue di legno e terracotta, vengono qui camuffati dalle grandi dimensioni del dipinto e il volto viene ritratto all’altezza dello sguardo. Nasce così l’esigenza di cercare un contatto visivo, un confronto umano con la figura che la pittura stessa in quanto mezzo rappresentativo permette di realizzare. The pictorial language within my research is often used as an iconological medium and sometimes becomes the protagonist itself, a shady and layered filter that modifies reality, giving it a further interpretation. The object, deribelately represented out of scale, undergoes a camouflage that changes its meaning, through brushstrokes and more or less dense layers of color. Diversi componenti di lampadari in vetro di Murano dalle forme vagamente floreali si ammassano in vari livelli di trasparenza come fossero su una tavola imbandita; la coltre notturna e subacquea sfasa le forme e fa emergere la luce, creando una rete serpentina di sensazioni liquide. Oggetti derivati da una tradizione antica e di valore rimangono sospesi in una dimensione fuori dal tempo, sviliti dall’ammassarsi l’uno sull’altro in un contesto di mercificazione, riacquistano bellezza nel loro valore intrinseco. Different components of Murano glass chandeliers with vaguely floral shapes pile up in various levels of transparency as if they were laid out on table, the night and underwater blanket displaces the shapes and brings out the light, creating a serpentine network of liquid sensations. Objects derived from an ancient and valuable tradition remain suspended in a timeless dimension, having been debased massed together, one on top of the other in a marketised context, they regain cartoline in carta riciclata, frottage a grafite su carta pietra, dimensioni variabili. Nel 1551, la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia indisse un bando per sostituire la allora struttura lignea del Ponte di Rialto con una più solida in pietra. Vista la conformazione del territorio e la complessità dell’opera architettonica, passarono 37 anni prima che i lavori prendessero il via, una lunga attesa nella quale il popolo veneziano iniziò a burlarsi dell’effettiva riuscita dei lavori.Si dice che, nel mezzo del mercato di Rialto, una popolana avesse sentenziato: “quando che i finisse il ponte, me ciaparà fogo la mona” (“quando finiranno il ponte mi prenderà fuoco la vagina”), e un popolano avrebbe così rilanciato “sto ponte i lo finirà quando ch’el casso farà l’ongia!” (“questo ponte lo finiranno quando al mio pene crescerà l’unghia”). Il ponte in pietra fu poi ultimato tra il 1588 e il 1591 e, in allusione a questa scommessa diventata famosa in tutta la città, sulla facciata del palazzo dei Camerlenghi furono scolpiti due bizzarri altorilievi, raffiguranti una donna-grifone recante una fiamma tra le gambe e una figura maschile con un pene unghiato. Una dedica alla diffidenza infondata, allo scetticismo verso un progetto che pareva azzardato ma a cui, come mi piace pensare, l’atteggiamento canzonatorio e genuino tipico dei veneziani sembra aver portato fortuna. <img width="2067" height="1474" width_o="2067" height_o="1474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5c204c1c9d775ea00ad405b115ebd9f2ed3326d5d2e66e8db48650ccbc71c840/cartolina-fronte.jpg" data-mid="135910327" border="0" data-scale="80" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5c204c1c9d775ea00ad405b115ebd9f2ed3326d5d2e66e8db48650ccbc71c840/cartolina-fronte.jpg" /> Attraverso la realizzazione di cartoline compilabili dai visitatori, recanti la frase “Quando... ...me ciaparà fogo la mona”, intendo mettere in palio la mia salute intima e portare anche io un po’ di fortuna ai sogni, desideri e messaggi delle persone, verso un futuro migliore per la città, un futuro migliore per se stessi o per il pianeta. Non si sa mai che prima o poi s’avverino. I frottage su carta pietra di porzioni del corrimano del Ponte di Rialto mettono in luce l’erosione e il “consumo” irrispettoso a cui la città di Venezia è quotidianamente soggetta. Affacciarsi alla balaustra del Ponte in contemplazione del paesaggio e accarezzarne la superficie è oggi una prerogativa delle decine di migliaia di turisti che vi si susseguono ogni giorno, per il tempo di una foto o di un bacio, per incidervi un segno che dimostri loro il fatto di essere stati lì. Recandomi al Ponte di Rialto per la realizzazione dell’opera, sgomitando tra i visitatori in transito, venendo da questi percepita come una parte del loro sogno romantico veneziano, ancora una volta mi sono trovata a immaginare l’inevitabile. Il destino di Venezia, da orgoglioso polo commerciale, culturale e artistico, fiorente e prospero, ad oggi si regge fondamentalmente sulla sua fama instabile di città-parco divertimenti, a misura di un turismo “usa-e-getta” che la consuma e la erode lentamente, che di essa percepisce solo un travestimento costruito appositamente. In questo scenario gli abitanti autoctoni non trovano né spazio né voce e il loro numero decresce costantemente. Se questo è il presente, che direzione prenderà il futuro? Quando_me ciaparà fogo la mona riporta in auge un’antica scommessa, in un epoca in cui si fa un gran parlare di opere a fin di bene la cui effettiva realizzazione sembra non arrivare mai, vuole dar voce agli scettici e alle scettiche come me che, sotto sotto, ancora sperano che Venezia torni ad essere amata per davvero. <img width="3166" height="4565" width_o="3166" height_o="4565" Il significato letterale che attribuiamo comunemente alla parola “simulacro” corrisponde all’oggetto fisico che reca l’immagine di una divinità; allo stesso tempo, il termine si riferisce ad una condizione di apparenza del reale, qualcosa, cioè, che lo imita ma non in modo del tutto fedele. In quest’ultimo senso, simulacro è qualcosa di inautentico, una simulazione, un falso rappresentante dell’originale. Le visioni macroscopiche delle fusioni metalliche, quest’ultime ricavate da un processo che per sua natura comporta la perdita di alcuni dettagli e appone deformazioni casuali, subiscono a loro volta una nuova trasformazione attraverso ulteriori passaggi: dalla fotografia al disegno, dalla carta al gesso. Il gesso, indurendosi, intrappola la grafite e lo strato superficiale del foglio di carta, restituendo un‘immagine rarefatta del disegno; allo stesso tempo, modificando le proprietà fisiche del supporto, la traccia disegnata ne emerge più fragile e preziosa. Nonostante questo, durante l’ultimo secolo la superficie lagunare coperta dalle barene è diminuita quasi del 70%. L’operazione artistica si inserisce in questo argomento poetico-ecologico con delicatezza, prelevando rami e foglie di salicornia, inula e altre specie da zone in cui crescono ancora rigogliose, senza quindi intaccare l’ecosistema, per trasformarle in due tipi di metallo: il piombo, emblema della tradizionale pesca lagunare ma anche dell’inquinamento da metalli pesanti che ha portato alla parziale distruzione dell’ecosistema; l’argento, strettamente legato alla tradizione alchemica e alla gioielleria, puntando a sottolineare come questi elementi siano preziosi per la vita. La pianta muore nel momento in cui viene prelevata, ma viene resa fossile dalla fusione metallica, uscendo dalle zone periferiche e difficilmente accessibili, segrete, della Laguna per manifestarsi nello spazio espositivo, trasformandosi in un archivio botanico di specie in pericolo. The series consists of several attempts at metal casting, aimed at transforming specimens of lagoon plants collected on saltmarshes, a particular micro-ecosystem typical of the Venetian lagoon, into metal.The saltmarsh is closely linked to the historical development of Venetian civilization as well as the survival of the lagoon and of the city itself; it has an important role in controlling the level of the tides, in cleaning the air and in the life of numerous species of flora and fauna; it maintains the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Despite this, in the last century the surface area of lagoon covered by saltmarshes has decreased by almost 70%.The artistic operation enters into this poetic-ecological landscape with delicacy, taking branches and leaves of salicornia, inula and other species from the area where they still thrive, without therefore affecting the ecosystem, to transform into two types of metal: lead, emblem of traditional lagoon fishing but also of heavy metal pollution which led to the partial destruction of the ecosystem; and silver, closely linked to the alchemical tradition and jewelry making, aiming to underline how these essential elements are precious for life.The plant dies the moment it is picked, but is made immortal by the metal casting, leaving the damaged and not easily accessible, secret Il progetto nasce per la realizzazione di un libricino di disegni, “I dolci e i matti”, pubblicato a maggio 2021 da bruno (Venezia). Il libricino fa parte della mini collana “Salsiccette Snack”, da un’idea di Thomas Braida. <img width="5251" height="3825" width_o="5251" height_o="3825" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a5142d1979974dad40e4a418e1543d5f7fdfa71ee15fe000b7893894f535a7bb/1.jpg" data-mid="110988334" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a5142d1979974dad40e4a418e1543d5f7fdfa71ee15fe000b7893894f535a7bb/1.jpg" /> I soggetti de I dolci e i matti sono alcune statuette del presepe napoletano tradizionale, figure in legno e ceramica composte da vari elementi, ciascuno di essi realizzato e decorato a mano da abili artigiani, e impreziosite di vesti e orpelli. Si tratta di oggetti molto particolari e costosi, di un’altezza che va dai 30 cm sino a sfiorare il metro, e che ancora vengono realizzati e messi in vendita nelle botteghe più tradizionali. La quasi totalità dei personaggi che si trovano ne I dolci e i matti compongono il ricco retroscena popolare e pagano che accompagna la natività cristiana: passanti, venditori ambulanti, fruttivendoli, signore ben vestite, ubriaconi, musicisti, seni scoperti, animali da cortile o anche spesso esotici, costituiscono il grande rituale quotidiano della vita in paese, contribuendo alla costruzione della nota scena presepiale napoletana, in cui il cristiano e il pagano, il Bene e il Male, coesistono. Il libricino vuole richiamare questa dualità sotto molteplici punti di vista: come suggerito dal titolo e dalla netta divisione interna costituita dalla frase “Dopo il tramonto, tutti diventano mostri”, i disegni sono articolati in modo da costituire una narrazione suddivisa in due fasi, quella del giorno, del lavoro, delle passeggiate e degli incontri fortuiti, e quella della notte, della baldoria, dell’alcol, della frenesia-follia. Un solo personaggio si discosta dagli altri: una statuetta della Madonna, spogliata delle sue vesti, dei simboli cristiani e dei gioielli, osserva la scena con sguardo impassibile. Sotto il suo sguardo, tutti gli altri personaggi si fondono in uno sciame brulicante e diventano, allo stesso tempo, un po’ dolci e un po’ matti, ambivalenti, sia prima sia dopo il tramonto. Ogni tanto, qualcuno di questi personaggi si accorge della sua presenza e volge lo sguardo al cielo. Attraverso un’altra chiave di lettura, più diaristica e personale, la narrazione richiama al circolo vizioso della mia vita passata a Venezia, gli incontri con gli amici (alcuni dei quali ritrovo nei volti e nelle posture di questi personaggi) e le feste improvvisate che spesso, oramai per un senso di abitudinarietà, mi ritrovo a vivere con distacco. appartenuti a mia nonna Teresa, che ho ritratto a partire dalla primavera del 2019. L’archivio visivo, non ancora terminato, si propone di catalogare centinaia di soprammobili, cimeli e chincaglierie accumulate negli anni dalla nonna e lasciate in sua memoria alle sue sei figlie. Il processo d’archivio inizia dagli oggetti lasciati a mia madre, di cui i disegni rappresentano una parte, e intende osservarli annullando ogni differenza di valore e scala, traducendo ognuno di essi in linee essenziali e sovrapposte nello stesso spazio del foglio 20x14. Questa traduzione “povera” segue linee verticali quasi identiche tra loro, che si vanno a sovrapporre, mutando in intensità e dando origine a un’immagine che è copia infedele dell’originale. L’oggetto ne emerge come un ricordo rarefatto, l’equivalente analogico di un’immagine pixelata, fuori fase perché appartenente ad un’altra temporalità. Allo stesso modo, il valore dell’oggetto non è da identificare nelle sue qualità intrinseche, ma nell’essere la traduzione fisica di un ricordo. Questo modo di disegnare mi costringe a procedere in maniera lenta e analitica, ripetendo le linee innumerevoli volte. Così, l’immagine si traduce in disegno attraverso la mia memoria, rimanendovi al contempo intrappolata: un processo meditativo e di ri-conoscimento di oggetti intrisi di storie familiari, racconti ed esperienze passate. La collezione di oggetti, spesso apparentemente assurdi o privi di importanza, è sopravvissuta al passare del tempo grazie all’attaccamento di una famiglia. L’atto artistico di tradurli in questa maniera, condividendoli, vuole sottolineare la storia e l’evoluzione di un affetto familiare privato che può essere immediatamente accessibile a ognuno. These drawings portray just a fragment of the vast collection of objects that belonged to my Grandma Teresa, and which I have been depicting since the spring of 2019. This visual archive, which is still incomplete, exists with the intention of cataloguing the hundreds of ornaments, keepsakes and trinkets collected over the years by my grandma and left, in her memory, to her six children. The archiving process, beginning with the objects that were left to my mother, aims to observe whilst cancelling out the differences in value and size between them. The process translates each of the objects into essential lines laid out always in the same space on a 20x14cm sheet of paper. This “poor” translation runs along practically identical vertical lines. As these lines are superimposed one on top of the other, they create variations in intensity and give birth to an image which reproduces the original object, an unfaithful copy. The object emerges in the form of a subtle memory, the analogic equivalent of a pixelated image, out of sync, belonging to another time. Equally the value of the object is not found in its intrinsic qualities but as a physical embodiment of a memory. This manner of drawing forces me to work slowly and analytically, in the repetition of countless lines. And so, the image is translated through my memory, and at the same time remain stuck there within. It is a meditative process, a process of re-cognition of objects intrinsic to my family history, of stories and of past experiences. The collection of objects, which often appear absurd or unimportant in and of themselves, has survived the passage of time thanks to the bond of a family. The artistic action of their translation, sharing them in this way, hopes to underline the history and evolution of private family affection and render it immediately accessible to everyone. I. Insieme ad essa, il mercante mi ha regalato due rullini usati scattati dalla stessa macchina, uno dei quali ancora inserito al suo interno. Le pellicole - di marca Perutz e fuori produzione da vent’anni - erano piuttosto datate, le ho quindi sviluppate senza l’aspettativa di trovarvi nulla, per pura curiosità. Sorprendentemente è invece emersa una collezione di scatti privati che ruotano intorno al compleanno di un signore di nome Biagio: il nonno di una sconosciuta famiglia del ragusano. Lo stile è tipicamente famigliare, in entrambe le accezioni del termine: è vicino alla sensibilità di ognuno di noi, possiamo immediatamente leggere il contesto in cui le foto sono state scattate e i rapporti che intercorrono tra i diversi membri della famiglia; questo perché ognuno si è trovato immerso in una situazione analoga, che sopravvive ostinatamente all’evoluzione della tecnica: non ha importanza se lo strumento sia la pittura nel Rinascimento, la macchina fotografica di grande formato di Thomas Struth negli anni ‘90 o l’iPhone della zia allo scorso Natale. Il linguaggio implicito della ritrattistica permea inconsapevolmente ognuno di noi, incluso ovviamente anche l’uomo o la donna dietro all’obiettivo del compleanno di Biagio che non ha nessuna voglia di comporre l’immagine: famigliari si posizionano seguendo i preconcetti della foto di gruppo ma in modo caotico e nell’inquadratura spuntano elementi che un fotografo definirebbe di disturbo - un sacchetto della spesa, mani e teste che rubano il fuoco automatico della macchina e via dicendo.Questo fattore di profonda personalità, di empatia verso una famiglia di sconosciuti, mi ha spinta a “scavare” nei negativi giunti a me per caso, investigandone i dettagli per collocare questa scena nello spazio e nel tempo: sulla torta compare la scritta “Buon 68 Compleanno Biagio”, sulla felpa di un nipote compare il nome di un’associazione calcistica di Scicli, alle spalle di un bambino appare il calendario del 2000. I disegni realizzati tramite il ricalco su un supporto cartaceo, insieme agli ingrandimenti digitali effettuati sulle fotografie, rivelano dettagli curiosi sulle personalità dei vari membri della famiglia o situazioni che sfuggono alla logica del ritratto. Lo stile volutamente fumettistico e il segno frammentato contribuiscono nell’alienare alcune dinamiche dalla scena principale, ricostruendo una narrativa parallela. Together with it, the merchant gave me two used rolls of film, one of which was still inside the camera. The films - brand Perutz and out of production since twenty years - were quite dated, so I developed them without expectations of finding anything, out of pure curiosity. Surprisingly, however, a collection of private shots emerged. These photos revolve around the birthday of a man named Biagio: the grandfather of an unknown Ragusan family. The style is typically familiar, in both senses of the term, it’s a kind of sensibility which is in all of us. We can immediately read the context in which the photos were taken and the relationships that exist between the different family members, because everyone has found themselves immersed in a similar situation. It is a form of experience which stubbornly survives the evolution of the technique, whether the instrument is painting in the Renaissance, the large format camera by Thomas Struth in the 90s or the aunt’s iPhone last Christmas. The implicit language of portraiture unknowingly permeates each of us, obviously including the man or woman behind the lens at Biagio's birthday who has no desire to compose the image. Family members position themselves following the preconceptions of the group photo but in a chaotic way, and in the frame there are elements that a photographer would define as disturbing - a shopping bag, hands and heads that steal the automatic focus of the camera and so on. This factor of profound personality, of empathy towards a family of strangers, pushed me to "dig" into the negatives that came to me by chance, investigating the details which allow one to place this scene in space and time. Through the digital blowup I analyzed the details that lie in the background of the story: on the cake the inscription "Happy 68th Birthday Biagio" appears, on the sweatshirt of a nephew appears the name of a football club from Scicli, behind a child appears the calendar of 2000. The drawings - in a deliberately comic style - , made by tracing on a paper support, reveal curious details about the personalities of the various members of the family or situations that escape the logic of the portrait.
